Describe Miss Meadow’s mood before and after receiving the telegram How did it affect her class?
Answer:
Miss. Meadow was heart-broken. The letter written by Basil had pierced her heart and she was bleeding. Her hatred and anger became a knife and she carried it with her. Her icy cold response to science Miss demonstrates it. She is least bothered about the tender feelings of young children who look at her face all-time for a friendly nod or smile of approval. Her favourite pupil Mary Beazley is baffled at her treatment of the chrysanthemum she had brought with so much love. The choice of the song “A lament” perfectly jells well with her worst mood. She is in fact in her heart lamenting over the loss of love, trust and future hopes. She is unnecessarily severe with young children forcing them to redo the singing which drives them to despair, pain and tears they manage to stifle.

After she receives the telegram from Basil apologizing for his insane letter, her mood changes to joy. She takes the chrysanthemum and keeps it close to her lips to conceal her blush. She goads the children to sing a song of joy congratulating someone for success. She persuades them to show warmth in their voices. Her warm and lively voice dominates the tremulous voices of the young ones. The young ones now realize that Miss Meadow who was in a wax earlier is now in her elements.

‘The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude’ Relate this to a real-life experience you have to share your thought in class.
Answer:
The difference between ‘A Good day’ and `A Bad day’ depends upon our attitude. Actually, you can make that happen by simply changing your attitude. It really is just about our attitude that shifts one good feeling to a bad one. If we let the bad feeling overcome us, chances are no good will come out of it.

Once I got a scolding from my mother for getting low marks in the Quarterly Exam I didn’t take my breakfast. With a bad state of the mind, I went to school. I thought that the day would be a bad day for me. During the break time, I sat alone and thought about why my mother advised and scolded me.

I realized my mistakes. Then I started to study well, concentrate on my classwork and listened to the class with keen eyes I changed my attitude towards the right way In the evening, I went to my mother and asked her to forgive me. My mother hugged me. So, that day ended with happiness.

I always remember an anecdote. Kannadasan has recounted this anecdote. A temple elephant was proceeding to the temple. “இசைப் பாடம்” என்ற இக்கதையில் ஒரு இசை ஆசிரியரின் மனநிலையானது நியாயமற்ற முறையினால் மன அமைதியிழந்து அவளின் மனநிலைக்கேற்ப எவ்வாறு கடுமையாக மாற்றத்திற்குள்ளாகிறது என்பதை வாசிப்போம்.

Stephen Leacock’s visit to the photo studio turns out to be an annoying experience for him. Discuss citing relevant instances from the story.
Answer:
The author had to wait for an hour and read the magazines like “The Ladies Companion, Girls’ Magazine, and the Infants’ Journal. He had a disturbing feeling that he had done an unwarrantable thing in breaking in on the photographer’s privacy and his scientific pursuits with a face like his. After studying his face for some time from behind the camera, he said, the face was wrong. He commented that the face would be better three-quarters full. Then he held the author’s face making him believe that he was going to kiss it. He twisted the author’s face as far as it would go. He said that he didn’t like the head. He asked him to open the mouth a little and then close it. Then he said that the ears were bad. He suggested that he should drop them a little more. He asked him to roll his eyes under the lids.

He asked him to turn his face upward a little and keep his hand on the knee. He instructed the author to hump the neck and contract the waist and also twist the hip. It was the last straw when he said that he didn’t quite like his face for, it was just a trifle too full. These numerous instructions and cynical comments about the features of his face annoyed him. He exploded with anger saying that he had lived with the same face for forty years. He even wanted to leave the place without taking the photograph. When he was about to get up, the photographer clicked the button. The photographer looked pleased. He said that he had caught the author in a moment of animation. Thus the experience with the photographer was really annoying.

“To me, it is but a worthless bauble” Why did the photographer’s touch of technical expertise appear a worthless bauble to Leacock?
Answer:
On Saturday, the author went back to the photographer for his photograph. The photographer showed his photo. He looked at the photo. The author was surprised as the photographer made so many changes in his eyes, eyebrow, mouth, etc.

He removed the eyebrows and he retouched the eyes. The photograph didn’t look like the author’s photo at all. The author wanted a photograph that would have looked like himself. He wanted something that would depict the face as God gave it to him.

He wanted something that his friends might have kept after his death to reconcile them to his loss. But what the author wanted was not done at all. The purpose of the photograph was wasted. So the author told him “ To me it is but a worthless bauble.

Question i.
Based on your understanding of the play, explain how a mistake understanding of events can lead to confusion. How has the author used this unexpected combination of events in the situation to create humour?
Answer:
Author C.V. Burgess is a master craftsman. He reveals only a few names. The first patient Joe and his wife Emily are the most dominant characters. Joe is inside the surgical room. Emily is apprehensive about the husband. Among two children the dramatist uses only the girl’s name Dorothea and the Dentist hospital becomes a play area for Dorothea and the little boy who claim the same magazine for reading. The snobbish woman who goes on showing her

photo album gives us an impression if she came to see the doctor or to show her photos. The whole play resolves around the dramatic irony of patients’ guess as to what happened inside the dentists’ room and what really happened. The pliers, hack saw and the huge hammer were taken inside the dentist’s room only for opening the tool cabinet. But the patients wondered how these tools would be used in surgery. The groaning noise from inside the dentist’s rooms and the vexation of Emily Joe add to the dramatic irony. A few women patients leave the waiting room scared of subjecting themselves to the torture of having their bad teeth extracted with carpentry tools. The nurse moves about with all feigned seriousness without disclosing the fact of the misplacement of key which adds to the comic situation

Answer:
Once I visited the dental hospital with my mother for my cavity problem. I couldn’t bear toothache. My neighbour kept on talking about their family problem and asking me to give solution But, how could I give when I had a toothache. I thought myself that they were funny people.

After an hour, the Nurse called in Dentist examined my mouth and was shocked that I had a rare kind of teeth. The dentist asked me what sweets were liked by me I replied, just didn’t like only three kinds of sweets.

Dentists wondered and laughed too. Dentists asked his assistant and other patients to look at it. I thought that I would become a one-man freak show I decided to get a concession when I was paying the bill. Because I contributed my teeth for their further research.

Describe the youth’s strange behaviour when he was in the train.
Answer:
The young man who entered the coach gave out a smothered curse. He was engaged in searching for something elusive angrily and uselessly. From time to time, he dug a sixpenny bit out of a waistcoat pocket and stared at it sadly, then resumed his search. He voluntarily broke the silence. He exclaimed that Mr. Sletherby was-going to Bill Manor. He introduced himself as Bertie, the younger son of Mrs. Saltpen-Jago.

He admitted that he was away for about six months and had not seen his own mother. Making use of the lucky coincidence that he was going to Brill Manor, he asked for a loan of three pounds as he had lost his sovereign purse and was desperately in need of help. He promised to meet him on the subsequent Monday.
“There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help.”

Question b.
How did Sletherby’s judgment of Bertie turn out to be a wrong one?
Answer:
Philip companion in the train was a young man who was searching for something frantically. The young man introduced himself as Bertie the son of Saltpen Jago. Bertie had left his purse behind after sealing an envelope with crest on the purse. Bertie needed three pounds desperately and asked Sletherby to lend it to him.

Question a.
Compare and contrast the character of Jimmy wells and Bob with suitable references.
Answer:
I think Jimmy Wells has been more successful in his career than his friend. It is not because he became a guardian of peace. It is a question of personal ethics. He was concerned with the means to achieve his end. He led a contented life and gained respect from colleagues and the general public as an honest officer. In twenty years Jimmy Wells had developed a good physique and a slight swagger. There was an air of pride in his movements. Bob, on the other hand, wasn’t bothered about the means. He just wanted to make money even violating the laws of the land.

Money is, of course, a measure of success but the end never justifies means. Bob may have been more successful in making money. But he is haunted by the fear of being arrested all the time. He is cunning and escapes the law. He is hated by police for breaking the law and hurting innocent citizens of the country. The guardian of law is bold and sure. But Bob is all the time perturbed and afraid. Thus ill-gotten wealth doesn’t give Bob peace of mind. I believe both the characters are well-made Jimmy, an ordinary person without much ambition but holding on to the path of virtue. But Bob has received his character in order to make money. Bob is like an art lover who has sold his eyes to buy a beautiful painting.

“Means should justify the end.” Explain this adage with reference to O.Henry’s story.
Answer:
When ‘Means justify the end’, ethical consideration focuses on what you do not the consequences of what you’ve done. In this story, “After Twenty Years” by O Henry. Jimmy goes out to find a job despite leaving his friend. Jimmy is doing his ethical consideration of work as he is an honest po¬lice officer. Jimmy has established himself as a respected policeman of integrity and decency.

Silky Bob and Jimmy Wells are both good friends and keep promises. It is pretty remarkable that silky Bob and Jimmy agree to meet each other. Later, but one is a cop and the other is a criminal. We know that Jimmy wells is a man of honour. Jimmy valued being a police officer, but he valued the memory of Bob’s friendship. He had a difficult choice to arrest him.

Jimmy can’t bring himself to do it but whatever the situation may be, he couldn’t give up the duty. That’s why he gets another cop to do it. Though he is his best friend Jimmy’s identity was more about being a cop than about being Bob’s friend. Finally, the means of Jimmy’s heart is justified at the end. That he did his job honestly.

“Tell me who your friends are and I shall tell you who you are” How will you explain this statement in the light of Jimmy’s and Bob’s friendship?
Answer:
We can’t fully agree with the statement “Tell me who your friends are and I shall tell you who you are”. This adage may be applicable to those friends who behave like “birds of the same feather” and involve in any activity with a common purpose. But this does not apply to those who live by different value systems personal and professional ethics. In this story, Bob and Jimmy Wells had been life-time friends. Jimmy Wells became, guardian of peace but Bob becomes a criminal wanted by Chicago police, Very often we tend to regard “a friend” as a life-time companion. A friend is one with who we need not conceal our real physical or psychological problems.

One does not wear a mask in front of a friend. A friend usually rushes to help another unsought in times of trouble. All these impressions are relevant only to those who travel the same path of virtue and socially accepted norms and cultural expectations. But a childhood friend who has chosen the evil path to make money is a ‘long lost friend’ with whom one may not like to continue the friendship. So, proverbs need to be taken with a pinch of salt. They may not be relevant on all occasions or apply to all always.

Poet says that we should not depend on others but stand on our own legs. That is the ladder for the man to reach the highest position in life.

The poet kulothungan says us to be the happiest. There is some work for everyone to do in this world. The job which is to be completed is not very far away. If we cannot be the highway but we can be the trail.

கவிஞரைப் பற்றி:

பேராசிரியர் வி.சி. குழந்தைசாமி (1929-2016) ஒர சிறந்த பொறியியல் வல்லுனர். நீர்மேலாண்மை துறையில் சிறந்து விளங்கினார். சிறந்த எழுத்தாளர், கல்வியாளர், இலக்கியம், கல்வி என பல துறைகளில் கால் பதித்தவர். இவர் குலோத்துங்கன் என்ற புனைப்பெயரில் தன் கவிதைகளை எழுதியுள்ளார்.

1988ம் ஆண்டு தனது “வாழும் வள்ளுவம்” என்ற நூலுக்கு சாகித்திய அக்காடமி விருது பெற்றவர். 1999-ல் தமிழக அரசு வழங்கிய திருவள்ளுவர் விருதைப் பெற்றார். இவர் மனித வளமேண்பாடு பற்றிய கவிதைகளை அதிகம் எழுதியுள்ளார்.

மனித திறமைகள் சிறியதாயினும், செயல்கள் குறைவாயினும் அதை நினைத்து நாம் பெறுமை பட வேண்டும். சாதனைகளும், புகழும் மட்டுமே வாழ்க்கையல்ல. பிறருக்கு துன்பம் தராத, பொய்வேசம் போடாதா வாழ்க்கையே சிறந்த வாழ்க்கை தோல்வி அடைந்தவன் திறமையில்லாதவன் அல்ல. சாதிப்பவன் எல்லாம் திறமைசாலியும் அல்ல. அனைவருமே அவரவர் வாழ்வில் சாதனையாளர்களே.
