Then she became the cabin manager. When the plane was hijacked she alerted the pilots to escape. The plane could not move. She tried to evacuate the passengers. The terrorists opened fire. She died with the injury inflicted by bullets. She was given Ashok Chakra Award, Justice for Crimes Award, Tamgha-e-Insaniyat Award. In the year 2004, the postage stamp was issued. A square in Mumbai was named after Neerja Bhanot.
